What is Social Engineering and do I need to do anything to protect myself?
Social engineering is a term that describes a non-technical kind of intrusion that relies heavily on human interaction and often involves tricking other people to break normal security procedures.
When referring to online fraud, it usually involves manipulating people into disclosing Passcodes, Log-in details or other forms of confidential information.
To help protect yourself it is recommended:
- That you don’t disclose confidential information to callers as people aren’t always who they say they are. If in doubt, ask for the caller's phone number, satisfy yourself that it’s genuine and offer to call them back.
- To never send confidential information by email as these can easily be intercepted by a third party. Like all reputable companies, we’ll never ask you to email personal details, account information or passcodes.
- Keep your credentials confidential at all times, like all banks, we never ask you for this information. We’ll only ever ask for security details such as your passcode, when you log in to our online banking system
