How can I avoid card fraud when abroad?
To protect yourself from card fraud:
Look after your card |
Never leave your card in your hotel unless you lock it away in the safe. |
Swipe your own card |
If shop assistants or waiters are left alone with your card, they could skim it (copy it). Once your details are captured, your card could be cloned and your account emptied. Avoid this by keeping an eye on your card at all times. |
Check receipts carefully |
Unscrupulous places abroad may add a nought to your bill. Make sure you check your receipt carefully before paying. |
Beware of double charging |
Some retailers pretend to make an error when they first charge you – then recharge you. Always ensure the first payment has been cancelled. Inspect your cancellation slip and keep it as evidence. Or offer to pay the difference in cash instead of being charged the full amount again. |
Never tell anyone your PIN, even if they say they’re from Barclays |
After your holiday, you might get a call from someone pretending to be from Barclays. They may say there are suspicious transactions on your account and ask for your PIN or card details. We would never ask for these details over the phone. Never reveal this information. |
